From science fiction to reality and beyond

Technology has made big leaps for mankind’s health and well-being. What was once science fiction is now a reality–robotic wraps, smartwatches and other monitoring devices that provide valuable information from augmenting workouts to saving lives.

The pace of technology is gaining, and next-gen wearables are too. Curious about what that will look like? Overall, to be less intrusive and more reliable. There’s also a push for wearables that are smaller and more flexible, stretchable, and washable. Can you picture it?

Researchers are weighing in about the future and nothing’s off limits. Undetectable devices that blend with clothes. Shirts with invisible sensors. A device so small it fits under your fingernail. Exciting? Yes. Slam dunk? No. As with any new development, there are hoops to jump through and bumps along the way.

The advantages of wearables are what researchers claim will overcome most obstacles to achieve successful advancements. In particular, it’s been determined that wearables are the best for real-time collection of “big data” from machine learning, artificial intelligence and data analytics to assist doctors making a diagnosis or prognosis.

Designers aim to make devices that don’t have to be recharged, which is a current complaint. They’re also creating jewelry “devices” like rings, necklaces and earrings. And patches, band-aids, stickers and temporary tattoos have unlimited potential.
