A mysterious love story

This love story could raise some eyebrows except our main character doesn’t have them, just one of several mysteries about the Mona Lisa’s eyes.

What was she thinking? While we may never know that question’s answer, scholars have been able to solve other equally perplexing questions about this puzzling painting.

The answer to who actually painted the Mona Lisa had long been in contention until 2005 when historians agreed that Leonardo DaVinci was the artist based upon a notation found in one of the many books housed at Windsor Castle. In 1503 DaVinci was commissioned by the husband of Lisa del Giocondo in honor of their second child’s birth.

The missing eyebrows? It’s said that DaVinci’s right hand became partially paralyzed in 1517 before he could finish the Mona Lisa which some scholars believe is the reason for why they don’t exist. Others claim the no-eyebrow look was fashionable at the time.

There’s so much more to this love story than meets the eye but it’s best to keep it short and sweet—unlike the 699 lines of romantic poetry Geoffrey Chaucer wrote in 1380 to celebrate the union of King Richard II of England and Anne of Bohemia. Today we’re still sending sentiments to loved ones on hearts day, although probably not as lengthy as Chaucer’s.
